Some of us aren’t natural blondes. In fact, most of us aren’t. But once every couple months or so, we take a couple hours out of our oh-so-busy schedules, and we transform ourselves at the will of our colourist. We do this all while getting a mini therapy session, a latte, a glance at the week’s juiciest gossip in the up-to-date weeky mags at our fingertips, and our secret stays safe. The B word isn’t mentioned, roots are covered and we go on being a blonde, bronzed, twentysomething, as we bask in the ‘blondes have more fun’ kind of lifestyle. Well worth the money. With blonde comes a state of mind. That is, until that state of mind gets disrupted.
There’s a point in time, when us blondes want to reinvent ourselves. And the first thing we start with always seems to be our hair. Say ‘I’ if you’ve either cut, coloured, or gotten extensions for your hair following a break up? I.
And why do we change our lockes after love? It’s reasonably priced, and it’s not permanent. We can go to the dark side following a split, and perk our hair back up to the blonde we know and love once we come to terms with the break up. Our hair and changing our look is directly connected to our feelings and wanting to get a fresh start. Either that or your funds are running low (thank you shoe addiction) and you have no choice but to break up with your colourist instead.
I’ve been blonde (platinum, honey and golden), brunette, amber, and black. I’ve cut my hair shorter than I ever will again, and I’ve let it grow so long the split ends made it short (and by so long I therefore mean too long.) Each colour has created a different internal feeling, which I then project.
Carrie Bradshaw in the ‘Sex and the City’ movie dyed her hair after Big left her at the alter. She was in a darker phase of her life and it wasn’t until she got back on track that she went back to blonde. We aren’t all Carries however, and the meaning for us each is different from the next. No matter what the drastic change from light to dark or long to short means for us, it has to do with a new start, and making a change for ourselves.
